After four long days of preseason and a quick tactical walk-through, the Hyde boys JV soccer team took the field Wednesday to face local rival, Brunswick. It was evident that it was the first game of the season but the Phoenix showed a great amount of grit as they came from behind to earn a point at home. Wait… does anyone keep track of that stat? Either way, I will!
The Phoenix had momentum in the first few minutes, primarily due to the energy of central midfielder Louis Liu. Liu, the number 10 on the Hyde team ( number designated for the top creator. Example: Messi. He’s our Messi ) lead the charge in the early going and had a great chance that was snagged by the keeper. His energy was matched by strong defensive play by veteran Bernard He. Both players will be options for varsity come late October. Despite allowing a goal in the 18th minute, the Phoenix continued to fight to end the first half. Wells Lawson, Aman Wisdom and keeper Thompson Upham Davis all earned their first caps and played with energy and passion. In the 38th minute, the Phoenix finally broke through on a great goal by striker Tato Tuo, better known around campus as ‘Potato’. That’s a nickname! Tuo streamed through the defense and put a well-timed shot by the keeper. 1-1 at the half!
The Phoenix had multiple chances to score in the second and were sparked by Eric Yoder. Yoder, a three year vet, has earned a role in the starting lineup and put on a passing display on the turf. 70 % of his passes were completed in the contest. Trust me, that’s accurate. The highlight of the second half was the effort the Phoenix put in during the last 10 minutes. They were able to keep the score at 1-1 and showed a willingness to play together in that time span. Lots of work to do, but a solid start. The undefeated Phoenix are back on the field next – week against Poland High School. Poland, Maine that is.
