It’s back to fundamentals for the Phoenix who couldn’t find the net in their league opener against Hebron Academy. On Wednesday, Hyde took to its home turf on a cold afternoon, looking to turn up the heat against the Lumberjacks. The first quarter was a back and forth affair as both teams played solid defense, but struggled to score. Andrew Davis (’15) and Jesse Higgins (’16) played stifling one-on-one defense, slowing Hebron’s strong attackmen. They also scooped up a combined twelve groundballs. LSM Ryan Moran (’15) played with unrivaled hustle throughout the game, hassling the opposing midfield. Brandon Nelson (’16), a newcomer to the sport, played heads-up defense on the man-down unit and he continues to improve every day. Despite a solid defensive effort, Hebron still found some room to shoot, but goalie Noah Horning (’15) stopped eleven shots, compiling a 55% save percentage.
Midfielders Aidan Sperry (’15) and Sam Zanta (’15) dominated the transition game, consistently legging the ball past the Lumberjack’s ride. Offensively, the Phoenix found room to shoot against the Hebron zone, but they only put two past the keeper on twenty-four shots for an ice-cold eight percent in shooting. It’s back to overhand bounce shots as the teams seeks to rebound with back-to-back games (Dublin/Winchendon) today and tomorrow in Epping, NH.
