All-American Jake Deutschlander!

Jake Deutschlander looking to score in the National Semi-Finals

Congratulations to 160 pound All-American Jake Deutschlander at the 2015 National Prep Wrestling Championships

The 2015 wrestling season came to an end this weekend at the National Prep Wrestling Championships at Lehigh University.  Hyde School was represented by senior 160 pounder Jake Deutschlander (Carver, MN) who entered the tournament as the fourth seeded wrestler in his weight class.

This historic tournament features wrestlers representing independent schools from all over the country.  This year, 125 private schools participated in the tournament representing 15 states.

Hyde’s lone entrant this year, Deutschlander entered the tournament as the New England Champion at his weight and looked to finish his high school career on the podium as a National Prep All-American.

On Friday morning, the action on the eight mats at Lehigh’s Stabler Arena heated up immediately.  Jake wrestled twice Friday and was dominant in the early rounds, scoring a win by fall over his opponent from Texas and a win by technical fall (15 point superiority) over his Loyola-Blakefield, MD opponent.  This set up a Friday evening quarterfinal rematch against a familiar foe from NMH School of MA.  In the quarters, Jake went to work immediately and wrestled at a fast and furious pace.  In this rematch of both the Class A League and New England finals, Jake really opened up against a very skilled opponent and earned a victory by technical fall, 20- 5, and a berth in Saturday morning’s National Semifinals.

Saturday morning in the semis, Jake suffered only his second loss of the season to the #6 Nationally ranked Weiler of Wyoming Seminary.  The match was evenly contested but his opponent was able to capitalize on scramble situations and come out on top.  He was then able to lock up a devastating cradle, and our Phoenix was forced to enter the wrestle-backs in search of a third place finish.  Wrestling is the most honest sport there is, and as wrestlers we all have to face two unforgiving realities: 1)someone has to lose and 2) there is always a better wrestler out there.  We wrestle in part to test ourselves against those two statements and to see what we are made of as a result.

In the consolation semi-finals, Jake squared off against an opponent from The Baylor School of TN, and despite tremendous effort to score a takedown in the second and third periods, ended up on the losing end of a 3-1 decision.  The measure of a true champion is in how they face setbacks, and I can tell you with certainty that Jake Deutschlander did not enter the Nationals believing he would suffer two losses and find himself wrestling for 5th place.  Sometimes that is how it goes though, and Jake is a wrestler who believes the most important match is the next one and so he regrouped mentally and prepared to wrestle his final high school match.

In the 5th place finals, Jake squared off against his NMH opponent for the 5th time this season, and there was no letdown.  Jake was methodical and collected as he wrestled to a dominating 12-4 victory by major decision and earned the opportunity to stand on the podium on the last day of his storied high school career as a National Prep All-American!

Jake’s efforts in the tournament earned Hyde School an outstanding 34th place finish out of the 125 teams competing!  Perennial champion Blair Academy, NJ avenged last year’s runner up finish to Wyoming Seminary (PA) and eked out the tournament championship by a narrow margin.

“Congratulations to 160 pound All-American Jake Deutschlander, dreaming big, working hard”, said Logan Kidwell, Jake’s coach.
