Hyde Phoenix at 2015 New England’s

Friday, the Phoenix traveled to Tabor Academy for the 2015 New England Independent Schools Wrestling Championships.

Sophomore Alex Hilton and Senior Captain Jake Deutschlander were our lone representatives by virtue of placing 2nd and 1st respectively in the Class A League tournament last weekend to qualify.

Wrestlers from 60 New England private schools gathered to crown 14 weight class champions and qualify the top 6 place finishers for the National Prep Wrestling Tournament.

Wrestling at 120, Alex Hilton faced one of the two eventual finalists in the opening round and lost despite outstanding effort.  In the wrestleback, he squared off against an opponent he bested last weekend at Class A’s.  When the final horn blew, Alex ended up on the losing end of the score and his New England tournament was over.  Sometimes we can do everything right, give our absolute best effort, and still come up short.  Alex has come a long way as a wrestler this season, and we are incredibly proud of his development and his tenacity!

Entering the tournament seeded #1 at 160 pounds, senior Jake Deutschlander got to work quickly Friday night earning his first win by technical fall (15 point superiority) in just under 2 minutes of action.  Saturday morning, Jake’s quarterfinal match was decided in just 13 seconds, setting up the tournament semi-finals against a very tough Brooks School opponent.  Jake was patient and explosive in the semi- finals and wrestled an outstanding match on the way to a major decision victory, 13 – 3.

The 160 pound New England Finals would see a rematch of #1 and #2 from Class A’s when Jake squared off against his familiar NMH foe.  Jake was a man on a mission and wouldn’t be stopped!  He linked techniques and wrestled an incredible match, scoring a dominant win against a very skilled opponent.  Congratulations to our 2015 New England Champion!

Jake’s outstanding effort and performance was recognized by the coaches in the form of the Most Outstanding Wrestler award!

The Phoenix finished the tournament in 21st place out of the 60 teams entered.  We head to Bethlehem, PA on Thursday for the final weekend of the wrestling season at the 2015 National Prep Wrestling Championships.

Wish us luck!
