On Wednesday, the Hyde Phoenix 3rds basketball team took on a rematch against the Lumberjacks of Hebron Academy. The early afternoon start saw both teams come out slow and unprepared for the competition. Sloppy basketball and many turn-overs by both teams, required use of the scoreboard only once in the first quarter. The Phoenix turned it around in the second quarter, exploding for 16 points. This effort was led by guard Henry Tao ’17 with 5 points, guard Alan Wu ’16 with 4 points, and forward Jason Wang ’16 with 4 points. With quarter was capped off by a huge three-pointer by sophomore guard Eric Yoder ’17. The Phoenix would go into the half up 18-4.
Hebron would not roll over and give up. The Lumberjacks would come out of the half with a full-court press that would stump the Phoenix. Hyde would not be able to put together a solid offensive set, and the press would lead to some easy buckets for Hebron. The Lumberjacks would close in on Hyde’s lead at the end of the third quarter 18-12.
Hyde was not out of gas just yet. The Phoenix would save some of their efforts for the final minutes of the season. Strong rebounding and put-backs by Jason Wang ’16 and two late baskets from Jayden Zhao ’16 would help seal Hyde’s fate. The Phoenix were able to maintain their lead and bring home the “W” in their final game of the season. The contest was a nice capstone to a season filled with hard work, lots of learning, and plenty of fun.
