………………………………1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Hyde Phoenix 6 6 6 9 27
Valley Cavaliers 5 7 6 12 30
The Hyde Phoenix came up short Friday night on the road in a close “back and forth” matchup that culminated in a 30-27 loss to the Valley Cavaliers. Despite the defeat, the Phoenix had a lot about which to feel good. In addition to completing a 14-4 season, the Lady Phoenix earned an invitation to the Augusta Civic Center as the 5th seed in the Class D Western Tournament. In the game vs. Valley, the coaches saw a lot about which to feel proud and confident. In the final 3 games of the season, there has been a concerted effort to provide additional game experience to all players on the team. Having won 2 of the last 3 games with that game plan, hopefully the team is now better prepared to be deeper and more experienced in crunch time. Against Valley, Jr. Jill Tolman ‘16 did a fine job of sharing the role as point guard, and So. Timesha Walker ’17 continued her trajectory of improvement with 6 points and strong defense. A couple of additional “shout-outs” go to Jr. Kelsey Talbutt ’17 who played perhaps her best game of the year on both ends of the court, as well as to Jr. Cherry Weng ’17 who sunk two clutch free-throws late in the game to keep the Phoenix close. Jr. Emma Levenshon ’17 led the way in the post with solid rebounding and defense while contributing 7 points to the team tally. Fr. Merrill Truluck ’18 showed increasing confidence in the way that she assertively took open shots and fought for rebounds. The game that night in Valley was held in dedication of the Valley seniors, but it was the younger Phoenix players of whom the Hyde team walked away feeling most proud. The team is now determined to take full advantage of a week of practice before they set out to tame the Richmond Bobcats up at Augusta in the opening round. Go Phoenix!
