On Wednesday, the Boys Thirds Basketball team traveled to Hebron Academy to take on the Lumberjacks in their first game in almost two months.  The long still between games did appear evident as the Phoenix came out slow in the first quarter, compiling only 5 points.  Fortunately, strong defense on the other end of the court shut down Hebron’s attacks and Hyde only gave up 6 in the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Phoenix come flying out of the gates.  The scoring was led by Dean Tian ’15(10 points) and Henry Tao ’17(9 points), donating 6 and 5 respectively in that quarter alone.  Continuing the shut-down defense from Jayden Zhao ’16(5 points), the Phoenix allowed only 2 points in the entire second quarter!  Largely in part to the defensive rebounding effort of big-man Jason Wang ’16, who would collect 10+ rebounds on the day to go with his 6 points.  Hyde would soar into the half up 18-8.

The start of the second half saw Hebron come out firing, and Hyde could not stop strong shooting.  The Lumberjacks would put up 15 points in the third.  Meanwhile on offense, the Phoenix could only convert 8 points.  A couple of baskets by Gary Gao ’17(2 points) and Daniel He ’16(4 points) would help keep Hyde’s lead 26-23 going into the fourth quarter.

Hebron would apply the press in the fourth quarter in an attempt to shorten the gap, but the Phoenix would find a way to break free.  A couple more baskets from Oliver Wang ’17(2 points) and Tao ’17 would help to seal Hyde’s fate in the fourth quarter.  Hyde was able to outscore the Lumberjacks 12-5.  The Phoenix were able to keep their composure and their victory with a final score of 38-28.  The boys will have to recuperate quickly, as they face a tough opponent in Waynflete in their next contest.
