Phoenix Boys Team Falls to Old Orchard Beach 38-52

OOB: 52
Hyde: 38

The Hyde boys’ varsity team took the court on Saturday against a strong Old Orchard Beach team on the road. OOB were winner of 4/5 going into the game and had recently lost to class C power Waynflete in overtime. It would be a great test for the Phoenix looking for real matchups before the playoffs.

The Phoenix started the first quarter by playing physical defense and rebounding on both ends. Senior forward Frederick Lasson was a physical presence throughout the first quarter and continues his solid play in the second half of the season. Lasson matched up with two 6’4 forwards and held his own on the glass. At the end of one, the score was OOB 12, Hyde 10.

Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter, primarily due to a combination of good defense and missed shots. Despite the low FG percentage, Hyde forward Andrew Palermo made a significant impact on the offensive end in the second quarter. Palermo scored 6 of his team high 13 points in the quarter and kept the Phoenix in the game. Despite positive momentum, the Phoenix turned the ball over on consecutive possessions at the end of the half and found themselves down four going into the third period.
The Phoenix continued to fight in the third quarter. Despite going down nine, they stormed back due to the play of guard Antoine Montgomery. Montgomery faced pressure and double teams throughout the game yet still attacked the rim and scored 8 of his 12 in the quarter. At the end of the third, the Phoenix trailed by 3.

Turnovers were the story in the fourth. The Phoenix struggled to deal with the OOB press and had three consecutive turnovers. You never want your offense to be the other team’s best chance to score. The Seagulls outscored the Phoenix by 12 in the quarter and eased towards an easy victory.

The Phoenix were led by Montgomery ( 12 points ), Palermo ( 13 points ) and Lasson ( 6 rebounds ). The Phoenix are back on the court for three critical games starting Wednesday at home at 7 Pm. Hope to see you there!
