1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Hyde Phoenix 4 15 13 10 42
Pine Tree Breakers 16 22 11 6 55
Last night, the Phoenix traveled to Freeport to play against Pine Tree, a tough class D competitor, for the first time. Hyde has struggled to find their momentum off the bus and unfortunately, this game was no different. In the first quarter Hyde was outscored by 12 when the Breakers came out firing. On offense, Hyde made silly turnovers against their press and shots just weren’t going in while Pine Tree moved the ball well to expose Hyde’s defensive vulnerabilities. For Hyde to close the gap in the second quarter, they needed to play tighter defense and shut down their best player Fr. Alex Goodman. Hyde started to drop their shots in the second quarter and improved on moving the ball to break the Breakers’ press although a couple of deep 3’s made impressively by Goodman kept the Breakers up by 19 going into halftime. In the second half, the Phoenix proved to themselves that they could run with this team and outscored them in both the third and fourth quarters and forced the Breakers to drop their press. With only two days until a rematch again away at Pine Tree Academy, the Phoenix will need to step off the bus with a different mentality and intensity with which they lack in this game.
Sophomore guard Lilli Allen returned off an ankle injury and put up 21 points three of which were 3’s. Jr. Diamond Brown added 13 points and Jr. Lutes Bartlett had a number of defensive and offensive boards. Jr. Jill Tolman hustled the entire game and played great defensive as she worked to shut down their freshman offensive threat. It’s a big two days for the Phoenix to refocus before they face the Breakers on Thursday once again!
