Phoenix Varsity Wrestlers at NMH Duals

17 January 2015

The Phoenix Varsity Wrestlers made the long trip to western Mass for Saturday’s NMH Duals.  This year’s event featured the top ranked team in New England (Phillips Exeter) as well as Wyoming Seminary of Pennsylvania, currently ranked #5 nationally.

Our young team entered the day missing key starters due to illness and knowing we would have our work cut out for us.  We wrestled 5 teams over the course of the day, and certainly took our lumps.  We finished on the losing end of the score in all 5 of our matches, but that only tells part of the story.

This Phoenix team made the coach proud on Saturday because of the heart, perseverance, and team spirit we showed.  To a man, every wrestler stepped on the mat to compete against some of the toughest competition we will face this season.  While the individual matches didn’t go our way, Hyde School passed the toughness test with flying colors!

We will take the lessons learned on Saturday, look to rebound from illness and injury, and return to the mat in our final NEISWA dual meets of the season at Lexington Christian Academy on 31 January 2105.

This weekend, the Phoenix Varsity Wrestling Team will be traveling north and leaving the country for the Eastern Canadian Wrestling Championships at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.  This is the first time in the history of Hyde Wrestling that we have attended an international competition.  We have been working hard in the Gary Kent Wrestling Center on both folkstyle (traditional American “high school” wrestling) as well as Freestyle (one of the Olympic wrestling styles, with a variety of different rules and scoring opportunities) and are very excited for this opportunity to get out on the mat and test our skills this weekend in Canada.

The team will be represented by a core group of committed wrestlers:  Seniors Jake Deutschlander and Tenzin Crane, sophomore Alex Hilton, and freshmen Connor Foye and Jacob Dawson.

This is a momentous occasion for Hyde Wrestling and we are thrilled to have this opportunity to be a part of an international event!

Wish us luck!
