1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Hyde Phoenix 12 5 9 5 31
Rangeley Lakers 17 19 12 15 64
The Hyde Phoenix suffered their first defeat of the season Tuesday with a 64-31 loss to Class D #1 ranked Rangeley Lakers on a neutral court at Good Will-Hinckley. Despite the defeat, the Phoenix have a lot about which to feel proud. After playing a strong first quarter in which the Phoenix consistently, broke the Laker full court press, the Hyde ladies had to rally when within a few short minutes, Jr. Forward Kristine Bailey (head injury) and So. Point Guard Lilli Allen ’17 (ankle) were lost for the game. Despite being outscored 19-5 in the 2nd quarter, the Phoenix never backed down. The message in the locker room at half was, “next girl up,” and the team rallied to play a relatively even 3rd quarter (12-9). Led by Jr. Captain Diamond Brown ’16 who scored a team high 15 points and who set an exemplary tone of resilience and perseverance, the team continued to fight. Jrs. Jill Tolman and Kelsey Talbutt ‘16 played aggressive perimeter defense and did a solid job of getting the ball up-court on offense, and Jr. Lutes Bartlett ’16 and So. Emma Levenshon ’17 did an admirable job of limiting the Lakers’ powerful inside game. Sos. Allie Grover and Timesha Walker ’17 came off the bench to relieve their teammates and did a fine job of maintaining the team’s intensity. Overall, this game was a very physical one, and there is no doubt that the Phoenix took some lumps, both physically and mentally. But, there is no doubt that the team is ready to respond in fine fashion and to apply the lessons learned from this game as it continues on its road to Augusta.
