Phoenix Varsity Wrestlers Bring Back the Cup

10 January 2015

The Phoenix of Hyde – ME renewed our winter rivalry with the Wolfpack of Hyde – CT in Woodstock with ownership of the President’s Cup hanging in the balance.  This meet would prove to be all that the Winter Classic has come to represent: an epic back and forth battle characterized by outstanding toughness and sportsmanship.

The Phoenix entered the meet down 6 points in the team score due to a forfeit at the lowest weight class.  Quickly finding ourselves down 18 – 0 early, we knew it was going to take extraordinary effort in order to win the day.  Junior 138 pounder Michael Jimenez got the Phoenix on the scoreboard first by earning his first Varsity win in his Hyde debut!  Congratulations Michael!  Freshman 145 Jacob Dawson added to the tally with a second period pin to make the score 18 – 12 in favor of the Wolfpack, and the score stood in the Wolfpack’s favor 30 – 12 as we entered the 170 pound weight class.

At 170, junior Andre Allen wrestled to a dominating victory, appearing to have earned the pin as time expired in the first period.  No matter, as he quickly turned his opponent for the pin in the second.

18 – 30 Wolfpack.

Wrestling at 182, senior Jake Deutschlander ignited the Phoenix fans with a solid performance, racking up six takedowns in the first period before pinning his opponent early in the second period.

24 – 30 Wolfpack.

Knowing we would be receiving a forfeit victory at heavyweight, the score effectively stood at 30 – 30 with one contested match remaining.  Junior 220 Jason Tang took to the mat with the match on the line, and battled to an incredible 4-1 victory!

33 – 30 Phoenix, and the President’s Cup will remain in Bath!

I am so proud of the tenacity of this team!  Congratulate these young men for their incredible victory as well as the effort, attitude, and leadership they bring to practice day in and day out in the Gary Kent Wrestling Center.

The Phoenix return to action on Saturday January 17, 2015 at the NMH Duals where we will face off against the very stiff competition of Phillips Exeter Academy, Long Island Lutheran School, #4 ranked (nationally) Wyoming Seminary and the host Hoggers of Northfield- Mount Hermon.  Wish us luck!
