Boys Varsity Basketball vs Temple
The Hyde boys varsity basketball team continued its solid start to the 2014-15’ season with a 61 to 30 victory over the visiting Temple Bereans. The Phoenix were sparked by the hustle and grit of senior NOAH HORNING who scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
The Phoenix continue to focus on the defensive end of the floor. Through three games, no team has scored over 40 points or shot above 35%. This is a team goal and the boys are committed to getting stops and ‘helping the helper’. Despite a sluggish start in the second game of a triple header, the Phoenix used a mixture of pressure out of their man to man and press defenses to build an early lead. HORNING, a high energy senior who had struggled offensively the first two games of the season, took care of much of the work on the offensive end. HORNING scored 8 of his 14 points in the first quarter, slashing in the lane and converting tough layups. After one, the Phoenix led 26-6.
The Temple Bereans are a new addition to the MPA and proved to be a well coached and hardworking team. Despite the early hole, the Bereans chipped away at the Phoenix lead in the second with consecutive three point field goals. The Phoenix responded with great energy from the bench. Senior center BYRAN WANG led the charge in the second half, grabbing tough rebounds, converting layups and most importantly, boxing out on the defensive end.
For the second consecutive game, the Phoenix bench earned a chance to compete. Junior guard NOLAN LOWDER was a force on defense, racking up 3 steals and 5 points in the fourth quarter. Senior point guard DAVID WU scored his first varsity basket and controlled the tempo to help the Phoenix earn another win.
Horning led the Phoenix with 14 points. Senior point guard ANTOINE MONTGOMERY added 13 points and 8 assists. Montgomery now has 24 assists in 3 games. That is unselfish basketball! Wang chipped in 7 points and 5 rebounds. The Phoenix take on AR GOULD today in an away tilt. One last game before a well-earned break!
