Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Sacopee Valley
Sacopee Valley: 36
Each practice, the Hyde Phoenix boys varsity team work on rebounding– in particular the art of the box out. As legendary coach Tom Izzo preaches, players should HIT, FIND and FETCH the ball after a missed shot. After weeks of practice, the hard work finally payed off. The Phoenix were led by dominating performances by forwards GREG KIDGER 17′ and SHAMAR JACK 16′. Kidger and Jack combined for 16 offense rebounds and 22 points, many on second chance opportunities.
Throughout the game, the visiting Sacopee Valley did a commendable job trapping and pressuring the Phoenix guards. Despite the up tempo style, the Phoenix were able to control the pace due to the play of seniors ANTOINE MONTGOMERY and KIEFER CUNDY. Montgomery was masterful in transition, scoring 16 points and more importantly, dished out a team high 8 assists. Cundy often sliced the opposing press and helped the Phoenix set up in an organized, zone offense. At the start of the 4th, the Phoenix led by 25 points.
Another key part of this game was the fact that the entire roster contributed. Players like EVANS KAGAME ’16, DAVID WU 15′, CONNOR CLORE 16′ and LAWSON LIN 15′ earned their first ever varsity minutes and competed on both ends. Many of these players are a product of the developing Phoenix program: JV players last year who have worked on their game and are making the progressions as they develop. It is fantastic to see as a coach!
The Phoenix were led by KIDGER who had his first ever double double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Montogmery finished with 16 points, 8 assists and 3 steals. Shamar Jack snatched 11 rebounds for the Phoenix.
