Phoenix Boys Varsity Team are #hydetough, Take Opener 38-29

HYDE: 38

SEACOAST: 29

In the first game of the 2014- 15′ season, the Hyde Phoenix boys varsity team overcame a slow start and poor shooting to beat the Seacoast Guardians. The mantra of the Phoenix for this season is #hydetough: playing together, exuding true toughness and playing uncompromising defense.

Both teams started slow in the first quarter, likely due to a combination of nerves and early season rust. Seacoast settled into an active 2-3 zone defense which gave the Phoenix problems in the first quarter. Quick shots and turnovers plagued the home team throughout the first half and the Phoenix left the floor for halftime trailing 15-14.

In an attempt to change the tempo of the game, the Phoenix aggressively trapped and pressed Seacoast to start the second half. RICKEY BUONO 16′ and ANDREW PALERMO 16′ combined to force three consecutive turnovers, highlighted by a fantastic display of hustle by Buono, our ‘water-bug.’ The Phoenix also had improved ball movement in the second half due to the work of senior point guard ANTOINE MONTGOMERY 15′. Montgomery controlled the game on both ends of the floor and brought the crowd to its feet with a nifty behind the back pass to forward GREG KIDGER 17′. The Phoenix closed out the game with poise and earned their first win of the season.

Montgomery finished with 18 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. Fellow senior KIEFER CUNDY made four clutch free throws in the fourth quarter and played 30 solid minutes. Palermo chipped in 8 points and 4 rebounds for the Phoenix.

Next game: 12/16 vs Sacopee. 7PM
