The Hyde-Woodstock varsity wrestling team traveled to Worcester on Wednesday to compete in a tri-meet against Northfield Mount Hermon and the host school. We were glad to have brought a few extra guys to help fill out our numbers and we were also excited to see PG Jimmy Murphy ’15 make his debut on the mat. After the hard work put into practice since our last meet, we were ready for the challenge.
Northfield Mount Hermon: 45
We opened up against NMH, a program which used to be the powerhouse in New England. They had a small team this year with only 9 guys, but the wrestlers they brought were high caliber. Markus Rhyner ’16 continued his win streak with a pin over his man in the second period. Team captain Dennis Cavalli ’15 earned a hard fought pin in the final minute of the third period against a skilled opponent, bringing his record to 4-0. Jimmy Murphy ’15 aggressively stuck his man at the 182lb class with a gator roll, and showed off some lightning fast shots. Our final 6pts came from a forfeit. Team captain, Dawit Kiflemariam ’15, wrestled a great match above his usual weight class and fought all three periods to lose in a decision of 8-10. A lot of our newer guys struggled with being pinned quickly though and this gave NMH a quick score boost early on. We will be working on both conditioning and fighting off our backs in practice this week.
Worcester Academy: 24
We wrapped up the day with a win against our Class A rival and host school, Worcester Academy. This school was also struggling with filling the weights and gave up forfeits at the 113, 120, 132, 138 and 220 weight classes. We had forfeits at the 113, 120, 220 and 285 weight classes as well, which meant the advantage of points scored through forfeits was nullified. With a fair battle ahead of us, the Wolfpack wrestlers showed their “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” spirit with some great wins. Markus Rhyner ’16 finished the day with yet another pin, leaving him with an undefeated record of 5-0. Dennis Cavalli ’15also achieved this honor with his own pin to wrap up a great day. Harrison Hall ’16 stepped up and put 6 on the board for the team along with Jesse McKiernan ’15. Both these young men earned their first pins of the season! The highlight of this match up went to Jimmy Murphy ’15 who went toe-to-toe against a solid opponent. When the dust settled, Jimmy won by major decision with a final score of 17-9. However, he did show a weakness in his conditioning and he will be working hard over the next month to build up his stamina for the matches he will hopefully see at National Preps.
As a team, we were very proud of our performance on the day. We also enjoyed seeing a great exhibition match by Jack Cardew ’15, in which he showed real technical skill and won. We will be working hard to prepare for the last match of December against Suffield, Canterbury and Marvelwood on Saturday.
