Phoenix Wrestling at the Caruso Invitational

8 December 2014

The Phoenix Varsity Wrestling team made the long trip to Newark, NJ for Saturday’s Michael J. Caruso Invitational at St. Benedict’s Prep.  This small tournament featured some of the best wrestlers in the country and offered a very high level of competition to our young Phoenix team.

The efforts of the team (only 5 strong) resulted in an 8th place finish out of the field of 10.  We finished ahead of New Jersey’s Peddie and Class A rival Northfield-Mount Hermon and just 3 points behind Class A League powerhouse Phillips Exeter.  Blair Academy, ranked #1 in the nation, earned the tournament championship.

Senior 120 Hang Zhao, sophomore 120 Alex Hilton, and freshman 126 Connor Foye all wrestled competitively and with the kind of attitude we have all come to expect for Hyde Wrestlers.  Though neither of the three made it to the placement rounds, all three gained a great deal of experience from wrestling with some of the best in the nation.

Senior Captain Jake Deutschlander’s 160 pound weight class bracket in this tournament was tough.  Jake, ranked #22 in the nation by WIN Magazine earned the third seed behind Blair Academy wrestlers ranked #1 and #5 respectively in their weight classes.  Jake wrestled to a dominant win in his first match before squaring off against 5th ranked Brandon Dallavia in the semi-finals.  Dallavia was able to control Jake for much of the third period and the match ended in a 5-0 loss for our captain.  Jake rebounded with a big throw against Phillips Exeter and a victory in the wrestle-back to set up the consolation final match against NMH’s all-american post graduate.  Jake got on the board first with a quick takedown and kept the points coming throughout the match on his way to a 3rd place finish by the score of 7-5.  Congratulations Jake!

Senior Heavyweight Deontae Crumitie began the day with a bye in the first round of competition to set up a match with Blair Academy’s 285 in the Championship Semi-finals.  Deontae wasted no time in securing a 5- point body lock throw for the takedown and the pin in a mere 13 seconds!  The big man then faced off against Wyoming Seminary in the Championship finals.  Deontae came up short and had to settle for second place, but the rematch between these two in January could be quite something to see.

The Phoenix begin the regular season on Friday 12 December at 5:30pm in a tri meet at Roxbury Latin School and return to Boston on Saturday the 13thfor a quad meet hosted by Milton Academy.

Wish us luck!
