Hyde Phoenix Varsity Wrestling vs Morse High School

Hyde: 55
Morse: 48

The Phoenix Varsity Wrestling program began the 2014- 2015 Wednesday night in the Pit at Morse High School to renew our annual Battle of Bath with our High Street neighbors.

It was an outstanding battle, with coaches matching wrestlers up for the best individual contests where every match counts towards the unofficial team score.

When the dust settled after 18 contested bouts, the Hyde Phoenix were victorious over the Shipbuilders by the score of 55 – 48!

The Phoenix stormed out to an early 23- 6 lead in the team score on the strength of victories from sophomore 113 Alex Hilton, sophomore 160 Andre Allen, senior 152 Tenzin Crane all by pin, and senior Captain Jake Deutschlander by technical fall.  The Shipbuilders responded with three pins of their own to take a brief 24-23 lead in the dual before senior heavyweight Mike Spencer earned a pin and put Hyde back on the winning track in this closely contested meet.

Jake Deutschlander’s second technical fall victory sealed the victory for the Phoenix in the second to last bout.

Joining Deutschlander in wrestling to a 2-0 record in the meet were senior Tenzin Crane, sophomore Alex Hilton, and junior 126 Louis Liu.  Finishing the match with one win were sophomore Andre Allen (1-1) and  senior Mike Spencer.

On the strength of just two practices, Hyde’s newest wrestlers set the tone for heart and determination.  Junior Kyle Henderson showed a great deal of toughness in his loss to a more experienced opponent as did junior 170 Brett Van Vort who faced off against Morse’s leaders and distinguished himself with his outstanding effort in both matches.

The co- Man of the Match recognition goes to freshman newcomer Jake Dawson at 138.  He stepped out on the mat last night twice, each time against more experienced opponents and displayed incredible heart and tenacity.  He made leaps and bounds from one match to the next, and his attitude in competition is an inspiring example of what it means to be a Hyde Wrestler!  Our other Man of the Match for similar reasons in junior 126 Louis Liu.  Unsure of whether he could wrestle this year due to an injury sustained last season, Louis has jumped right in to practice and put on an incredible display of toughness, ferocity, and sound technique in both of his victories last night!  Congratulations Gentlemen!

A partial Phoenix squad will travel to Newark, NJ for Saturday’s Michael J. Caruso Invitational at St. Benedict’s Prep and we begin official our dual meet season at Roxbury Latin School in Boston on Friday 2/12/2014 in a tri meet with Governor’s Academy.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, two Phoenix competed in the Westlake Memorial Tournament here in Bath, hosted by the Morse Shipbuilders.  Freshman 126 Connor Foye wrestled competitively though he finished at 0-2 on the day.  Senior Captain Jake Deutschlander dominated the weight class at 160 en route to two pins, a win by technical fall, and the Championship at 160 pounds.  Additionally, Jake was honored as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler!

We are off to a great start to the season here in Bath with an incredible foundation to build from of leadership, commitment, and hard work from veteran and new wrestlers alike!

Wish us luck.
