On a cold, wintry night the Phoenix swimmers climbed aboard the bus to the Wiscasset Community Center to face-off against Erskine High School. Morale was high when the coaches turned the key, only to discover the battery was dead. After some creative problem-solving, the swim program made it to the competition site for warmups.
This year’s team has many new faces, but has shown throughout practice to be more balanced and it showed throughout the meet. Caleb Lowrie ’17 had a big night winning the 200 IM, leading off the winning 200 Free Relay, and finishing second in the 100 backstroke. Parker Ward ’17, Carlos Sanchez ’15, and Burke Riley ’15 joined Caleb on the winning relay. Riley ’15 also proved to show some tough guts (and shoulders for that matter) swimming on short rest in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle while finishing 2nd in both events. In the end, Erskine overwhelmed the events in which no Phoenix swimmers participated and topped our boys team by eight points. With plenty to work on, the swimmers will hit the pool on Monday to pick-up where they left off.
