Undefeated Phoenix Boys Varsity Soccer Tops Hebron 2-1, Moves to MAISADs

October 31, 2014

Hyde School      2

 Hebron                1

Hebron Academy traveled to Bath to play the final regular season game for both teams under the lights at McMann Field.  The match was played on artificial turf with light winds and seasonable temperatures.

Much of the first half of play was back and forth with these two evenly matched teams.  Play was up tempo and physical from the first whistle.   Early on in the match, Hyde’s midfield did a nice job of maintaining possession and penetrating their defense.  In the 12th minute Captain Kiefer Cundy`15 took a throw-in deep in the offensive third of the field on the left side.  Cundy`15 lofted in a huge throw that bounced in the six yard box.  A defender kicked the ball high into the air, but miss-hit it.  Ben Mooney`16 moved in to intercept the ball as it returned to the playing field near the upper right corner of the six yard box, and headed it into the goal.  Hebron quickly countered on the ensuing kickoff, but Captain centerback Andrew Davis`15 stopped the attack at the critical moment.    In the 41st minute Kiefer Cundy`15 intercepted a pass ten yards inside the half field line.  He worked the ball down the right flank and into the box, cut it back and took a beautiful left-footed shot that went over the keeper an in, to make it 2-0.  The score would remain 2-0 at the half time break.

Hebron scored in the 53rd minute to bring the score within one.  The Hyde lads kept up their offensive attack for a majority of the second half, rather than lock it down defensively.  Ultimately, they were able to maintain the lead and win the game.  Other notable play came from midfielder post grad Abdibaari Hersi, Captain/keeper Noah Horning`15Dow Drukker`15 at stopper and James Kellogg`16 on the left wing.

This was a great match for the team with a wonderful result.  The boys played with intensity, competitiveness and class.  In many ways this was their best game of the season. They played as a unit and were able to beat a formidable opponent, ending the season undefeated!  Not too shabby.  The next match will be on Wednesday November 5that home against Kents Hill School, for the first game of the MAISAD tournament at 2:30pm.
