Phoenix Boys Varsity Soccer Tops Gould 3-0

October 29, 2014

Hyde School: 3

Gould: 0

Gould Academy traveled to Bath to play on the turf field on Wednesday afternoon.  The weather was clear and unseasonably warm with light and variable winds.

Hyde controlled the pace of the game early on.  In the 7thminute, Captain Kiefer Cundy`15 received a pass from post graduate Abdibaari Hersi who was playing on the left wing.  Cundy dribbled into the box and scored on a cracker of a shot from just right of center, to put the team up 1-0.  The scoring continued in the 15th minute when Captain Andrew Davis`15took a free-kick just inside the half on the right side.  Davis drove the ball deep into the box near the far post.  Kiefer Cundy`15timed his run perfectly and volleyed the ball into the goal to make it 2-0.  Four minutes later, Cundy was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick.  The Gould goal keeper made a nice save on Cundy’s PK, diving to his right.  The  score at halftime remained 2-0.

The Hyde squad had some fine chances on goal at the start of the second half, but none found the back of the net until the 70th minute.  Abdibaari Hersi passed the ball from the center of the field to James Kellogg`16 on the left wing.  Kellogg dribbled down the flank and into the upper left corner of the box.  He diced his defender and got a shot off.  The ball lofted into the upper right corner of the goal in one of the prettiest goals of the season to put the team up 3-0.  Other notable play came from Captain Noah Horning`15 who had another shutout at keeper, solid defending from Dow Drukker`15 at stopper, David Wu`15at left fullback, and Brandon Nelson`16 at right fullback.

The next match is Friday October 31st under the lights at the McMann Outdoor Athletic Complex in Bath Maine at 6:00pm.  It promises to be a good match.  The team is playing their best soccer of the season and are determined to play competitively with the whole school watching.
