Phoenix JVBS Battles Gould to Scoreless Draw

Hyde Bath Boys JV Soccer vs Gould

Hyde: 0
Gould: 0

Hyde: This past Saturday, the Boys JV Soccer squad took to the turf in a redemption game against Gould Academy.  The game got off to a late start, and the lengthy warm-up favored the Phoenix team.  The first 35 minutes of play saw Hyde full of passing and movement around the Huskies, and holding the majority of possession.  Midfielders Evans Kagame ’16 and Duncan O’Rourke ’16 gave heavy minutes and consistent play throughout the game, and new-comer Aidan Sperry ’16 gave the Phoenix some much needed speed at the attack position.

With about 20 minutes left in the first half, a through ball to Louis Liu ’16 gave a one-on-one opportunity against the keeper.  A partially blocked shot fell at the feet of Sperry ’16 who put the ball in the back of the net!  But the whistle had blown and the referee determined that a foul had occurred prior in the box, resulting in a penalty kick.  Midfielder Kyler Hella ’17 was called up to the spot for the kick.  Unfortunately, the shot would be saved by the Gould keeper, and the game would be scoreless at the half.

Strong defense from Jesse Higgins ’16, James Scharpf ’16, Bernard He ’17, Chris Lutts ’15, and Randy Genson ’16 would deny many Gould advances.  But when the Huskies did find a chance, goalkeeper Greg Kidger ’17 would squash any attempts.  Kidger ’17 would be called on a handful of times in the final few minutes of play, making some game-saving blocks.  Neither team could work the ball past the goal line, and the game would end in a nil-nil draw.

The Phoenix are riding a three-game unbeaten streak into the MAISAD playoffs next week.  The boys are looking forward to the always challenging Hebron Lumberjacks in the first round of playoffs on Wednesday.
