Team Effort Marks Win for Wolfpack Varsity Football vs Holderness

Saturday, October 18th

Hyde School 58

Holderness School 38

On Saturday, after a four hour bus trip and a forty minute thunderstorm delay, the Wolfpack took the field to take on the Bulls from Holderness School. Hyde kicked off first and recovered an on-side kick which was a great way to start the game. A few plays later, Jimmy Murphy ’15 found the end-zone for the first of his seven touchdowns on the day. Holderness scored on their first offensive play and it was clear that the scoreboard and kicking tees were going to get a workout all afternoon. The first half was a scoring affair with the momentum swinging back and forth. With the score 34-26 in favor of Hyde late in the second quarter, quarterback Harrison Smith ’15 hit tight-end Justin Allard ’15 for a critical touchdown pass that gave Hyde a little breathing room at halftime, up 40-26. The Wolfpack received the ball to start the third quarter and took care of business the rest of the afternoon keeping the Bulls at bay. Marcus Greenidge ‘17 ran the ball hard all day and also had a touchdown.

Despite Murphy’s individual performance being the best I’ve ever seen, this was truly a team effort. I can’t recall a team that put forth the amount of effort this one did in preparing for a scary Holderness offense. We watched film, practiced with Pomfret School down the road, twice did our D12 conditioning program, and learned an enormous amount of defensive information which the team executed nicely. The coaching staff and players should feel proud of the effort put into this victory, especially that which happened Monday through Friday.

Our offensive line should be acknowledged for a great effort. Whenever two backs combine for nearly 400 rushing yards, there’s a group up front getting the job done. They are: ends Justin and Austin Allard ‘15, tackles Omri West ‘16 and Jared Labades ‘15, Guards Jesse McKiernan’15 and Leonard Moore’15, and center Doug Main’15.

Defensively, senior captains Jack Greenberg ’15 and Harrison Smith were all over the field making tackles and/or knocking down passes. We look forward to staying at home next weekend and hosting Kent’s Hill School at 2:30pm on Family Weekend.
