The Hyde Phoenix hosted the Portsmouth Abby Ravens before an excited Family Weekend crowd. The game would prove to have many ups and downs for the fans to cheer and groan for. On the first play from scrimmage, Raven #20 Chris Weiss ran 52 yards off tackle for the score. Although the Ravens missed the extra point, only 30 seconds had passed and the crowd was quiet. However, three minutes later, former center/lineman senior Sam Zanta ( 8 carries for 57 yards and 2 catches for 8 yards on the day) capped a seven play, 64 yard drive with a 25 yard blast up the middle for the score. Gabe Bernstein ’15 then punched in the two – point conversion. The fans went wild as the Phoenix took the lead back 8 – 6!
Both bird-defenses held tough forcing several short drives and punts in the last of the first and early into the second quarter. Senior Captain Deontae Crumitie led the Phoenix D with 14 tackles and a sack. Austin Makris ’15 added a sack and 8 tackles while Sam Zanta ’15 added another sack and 12 tackles to the score. With 4:20 remaining in the half, the Ravens took possession on Hyde’s 40 yard line and proceeded to march backwards to a 3rd and 34 from their own 34 yard line. While Hyde waited for the long bomb, #20 Chris Weiss took a short screen pass from Raven QB #2 Ted Fenton and turned it into a 66 yard TD run. The point after was good and with a little over 3 minutes to go in the half the Ravens were on top 8 – 13. Hyde took possession on the 20 after a touchback and proceeded to be thwarted by the blitzes of the Raven – D. They blocked the punt and recovered on the Hyde 11 yard line. The defense held to a 3rd and 10 as Captain Toby Taradiena stuffed Weiss on two dives up the middle. With 54 seconds to go in the half the Ravens #13 Matias Dominquez hit a 27 yard field goal to put the Ravens on top 8 – 16 and the teams headed to the locker room. The Hyde locker room was very loud, then very quiet.
The 3rd quarter saw a different Hyde team on the field as the defense held Weiss and company to 10 yards in 3 drives. Unfortunately, the Hyde offense was not able to press the attack and both teams came up scoreless as the game moved to the last 12 minutes. On a Raven 2nd and 4, Toby Taradiena intercepted QB #2 Fenton’s pass and took it to the 3 yard line. On the next play Taradiena QB-sneaked behind Deontae Crumitie, Dan Morgenstern ’16 and Austin Makris for the score. Taradiena (8 carries for 46 yards) then added the two-point conversion to tie the game at 16 – 16 with 10:35 to go in the game.
Portsmouth Abby answered with a 14 play, 65 yard drive that again saw #20 Weiss carry the burden (and joy of gaining 206 yards on the day with 3 scores) and then capping the drive with a 5 yard blast. The PAT made the score 16 – 23 with 4:15 to go in the game. Hyde took the kick off and stared an 89 yard drive with 4:09 remaining. At 2:59 the Phoenix were forced to punt from their 10 yard line. The Ravens burned up the clock to seal the victory.
