GIRLS’ VARSITY SOCCER
October 8, 2014
Hyde – 2
Dublin – 1
The Phoenix girls returned to neutral territory in Epping, NH to face Dublin for the second year in a row. The team was hungry for a win and opened the game with intensity. Much of the first half was played in the Dublin end with several scoring opportunities for Hyde. Captain Jill Tolman ’16 seemed to be the rallying point, turning in her best game of the season. Roughly twenty minutes into the first half, the Phoenix scored on a great corner kick play. Emma Levensohn ’17 fed the ball short to Allie Grover ’17 who then played it back to Levensohn, striking the ball at an angle to score. The goal only made the Phoenix hungrier as they continued to dominate play. Ten minutes later, senior Jenny Balter ’15 scored on a shot just inside the goal area making the game 2-0.
Unfortunately, the momentum shifted during the second half as Dublin out hustled the Phoenix side. They finally found the back of the net on a cross that was deflected by a Hyde defender. What should have been a wakeup call didn’t seem to rally the Phoenix side. Goalkeeper Diamond Brown ’16 came up big with tough saves, including a one-on-one breakaway in which she dove to get the ball. Suffice to say, time ran out and not a minute too soon as the Hyde team seemed to be having difficulty getting their groove back. The Phoenix face sister school Woodstock and have already begun to prepare for what they expect will be a tough match.
