Girls Varsity Soccer
Despite the cold and rain, the Hyde Girls Soccer team came out fired up and ready to work hard on Saturday afternoon. Before the match even started you could sense the positive energy from the girls, especially from Maddie O’Conor as she excitedly got the team pumped up in the gym and led them to the Wolf for some positive pre-game words. Because of the terrible loss to Williams a few weeks ago, the team decided to make the focus on the day small: completing passes, trying new moves (specifically the pullback) and making good solid tackles on the defensive end. The first half was one of the most positive ever seen from the Hyde team. They came out ready to play and worked hard together. Though they let up 3 goals, the team never stopped pressuring the ball and saw some real chances on the right hand side of the field. The girls went into the second half with a true belief that they could win the half. However, fitness and poor touches definitely hurt them as they let in another 4 goals.
Though the score suggests otherwise, the game felt like a victory. The girls showed pride in their work ethic and grew immensely as they showed ways to communicate and support each other on the field. Stand outs were Hui-Ling Seow ’14 who had some unbelievable diving saves throughout the match. Joanna Ren ’15 showed up with phenomenal hustle and composure even though she had been sick in the morning. It was great to have Maya Steindler ’15 back on the field and she proved to be very effective in the midfield and up top. Coco Cai ’16 had a terrific game at left back where she consistently beat her girl to the ball, played with confidence and made it difficult for Williams to have success.
Overall, it was an enjoyable game to be a part of and the team is excited to build on this development and take on Rocky Hill at home on Wednesday. Please come out to support them!
