The Phoenix hosted the Dexter School, from Boston on a sunny fall afternoon in Bath, Maine. The first quarter saw each offense drive the ball over 50 yards, chew up the clock only to be checked by aggressive defenses that bent, but did not break. The 2nd quarter again saw both defenses dominate, until the last 16 seconds of the half when Dexter’s #21 Mahlon Hanifin found #5 Colin O’Brien open for a “Half Back” pass for a 9 yard TD completion.
The third quarter opened with Dexter recovering a fumble from an on-side kick, only to be thwarted4 plays later as Hyde junior Andrew Palermo intercepted the Dexter pass to give the Phoenix a first and 10 on the Dexter 46 yard line. Ten plays later, Hyde was knocking on the Dexter goal line with a first and goal on the 5 yard line. Dexter took over on downs on a 4th and goal from the 1 yard line with 3:23 to go in the 3rd quarter. One minute into the 4th quarter, Dexter’s #21 Mahlon Hanifin found the end zone on a 43 yard ramble off tackle for the score and with the 2-point conversion Dexter extended the lead to 0 – 16. Another on –side kick was recovered by Dexter, but the Hyde defense forced a 3 and punt drive. Hyde then also went 3 and out and with 6:22 left in the game Dexter took possession of the ball and drove 36 yards in 7 plays for the score with 3:10 remaining in the game for the final score of the game.
Hyde ran out of time and options as the final horn sounded for a 23 – 0 loss. Hyde quarter back, Toby Taradiena ’15 was a highlight for the Phoenix as he carried 16 times for 121 yards, while Gabe Bernstein ’16 and Shemar Jack ’16 each carried the ball for over 50 yards. Seniors Austin Makris and Deontae Crumitie led the Hyde Defense each with QB sacks and over 7 tackles in the game.
