Boys JV Soccer vs Thornton
On Monday, the Boys JV Soccer team traveled to Saco, Maine to take on the Thornton Academy Trojans. This would also be the boys’ first game on artificial turf. The Phoenix would come out fleet footed and ready for battle. Central play fromJesse Higgins ’16 and Cooper Platt ’15 got the Phoenix moving the ball and keeping good shape. The defense would even be up in the attacking third. Outside backs Chris Lutts ’15 and Randy Genson ’16 would press up and lock the ball on the Trojan half. The Thornton offense would eventually find their ground, and would place a low shot pass the keeper. Hyde would trail 1-0 at the half.
Despite the majority of possession and ball in the Thornton third of the field, the Trojans would play a ball over the top and convert the one-on-one breakaway early in the second half. Winger Evans Kagame ’16 would help the Phoenix offense, connecting passes and making strong runs. Forward Louis Liu ’16 would contribute heavy minutes off the bench, relieving a banged-up Phoenix squad. A brief moment of glory came when Duncan O’Rourke ’16 would be played a through ball that found him one-on-one with the goalie. O’Rourke would bang the ball home past the Thornton keeper.
Unfortunately, this was a game of conversions. Thornton Academy converted on their few chances at the Hyde end, while the Phoenix could not quiet put the final pieces together, despite having possessions in dangerous areas. The final outcome would be 4-1 in favor of Thornton Academy.
