Phoenix BVS Stay Strong in 1-1 Tie with Hebron

October 3, 2014

Hyde School: 1

Hebron: 1

Boys Varsity Soccer traveled to Hebron Maine to play a MAISAD match against Hebron Academy on Friday.  The contest was played on their natural grass pitch under sunny warm early fall conditions.

Hyde did a nice job of maintaining possession during the first 45 minutes of play.  Captain Kiefer Cundy`15 and post graduate Abdibaari Hersi worked nicely with wingers Dylan Budd`16 and Ben Mooney`16 to keep the ball moving forward.  There were chances on goal from both teams, but the game was tied 0-0 at halftime.

The Hyde squad came out a little flat at the start of the second half.  Midway through, Hebron had a good opportunity on goal, but Captain Noah Horning`15 made a stellar save as to keep the sheet clean.  Captain Andrew Davis`15 and Dow Drukker`15, centerback and stopper respectively, both put in solid performances.  They played hardnosed/clean soccer, which effectively thwarted the opposition’s attacking players and also avoided unnecessary fouls, something that has been an issue in the past.   In the 76th minute a Hebron cross found an unmarked man near the top of the box, he scored to go up a goal on the Phoenix.   At this point, the Hyde lads mustered their reserved resolve and increased the tempo of the attack, creating some fruitful scoring opportunities.  With just 2 minutes left in the clock they worked it down the right flank and into the corner. Abdibaari Hersi connected a short pass to Kiefer Cundy`15 who crossed it in.  Left winger Dylan Budd`16 received the ball near the top of the box on the left side and headed it to James Lee`15 who also headed it to Gatouch Pan`17.  Pan`17 poked it in to tie the match 1-1.

All in all, it was a fine match with a good result.  This one could have gone either way.  A lot of things went well, and for much of the match the boys played up to their potential.  There are a few areas to work on in the coming week to tighten up the defensive shape and the offensive runs.  Overall, the coaches were pleased with the heart and competitiveness shown by the team.  Additionally, sportsmanship as good on both sides. The next contest will be on Wednesday October 8th  against The Dublin School at the Seacoast United Outdoor Complex in Epping New Hampshire.  Start time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
