Hyde Boys JV Soccer vs Gould Academy
On Saturday, the JV Boys soccer team made their annual trip to Bethel, Maine to take on the Gould Academy Huskies in another MAISAD contest. The Phoenix were not ready for the first half of soccer, and their play showed. Just about 5 minutes into play, the Huskies found the back of the net off a nice connection of passes. The Hyde defense seemed lost. Poor marking on a free kick with 20 minutes to go gave Gould another opportunity on net. The cross came in and the Huskies were left unmarked and placed a shot in the back of the net. The JV squad trailed 2-0 at the half.
A spirited half time talk gave the Phoenix new life in the second half. Midfielder Jesse Higgins ’16 and forward Sailor Xu ’16 played the majority of minutes, running hard and giving solid play. The Phoenix and Huskies battled back and forth well into the second half. And with roughly 12 minutes left in play, Greg Kidger ’17 would make a save and send a boot down the pitch to his forwards. Duncan O’Rourke ’16 would corral the loose ball, take a few dribbles, and then find the back of the Huskies’ net. The Phoenix trailed 2-1.
With approximately 8 minutes left in the game, Hyde’s defense would lapse and allow a fast break. Gould would score their third and final goal of the match on the breakaway. Although the Phoenix would try, they could not level the score. The game would end with Gould ahead 3-1.
The Phoenix will travel for their next two matches; Brunswick on Wednesday and a rematch against Hebron on Saturday. The boys continue to work hard in practice and hope to focus their efforts towards a full 80 minutes of soccer.
