Hyde School: 3
Gould Academy: 0
Hyde Boys Varsity Soccer traveled to Bethel Maine to play a MAISAD match with Gould Academy on Saturday. The contest was played under warm summerlike conditions on a natural grass pitch.
Much of the first half of play was back and forth with both teams struggling to find much rhythm. The defensive unit for Hyde did a nice job of jelling in the latter half of the first period. Dow Drukker`15 directed the defense at centerback and Nate Smith`16 filled the stopper role. The score was tied 0-0 at the half.
In the 48th minute, post graduate Abdibaari Hersi put a stellar corner kick into the middle of the box. Ben Mooney`16 scored on a nice header. Five minutes later, James Kellogg`16 passed a pretty ball to Ben Mooney`16 who found the back of the net again to go up 2-0. At this point in the match, the Hyde lads had found their stride and started playing a crisp, two-touch possession style of soccer. David Wu`15 had a great game at left fullback, as didNolan Lowder`16 at right fullback. James Lee`15 and Dylan Budd`16 split time on the left wing and both played well. Kiefer Cundy`15 directed play at center-mid with Abdibaari Hersi. These two worked together with James Kellogg`16, who played a withdrawn forward, to create numerous chances on goal. With 5 minutes left on the clock, Gatouch Pan`17 received a throw-in and flicked it with his head to Ben Mooney`16 who scored cementing his hat-trick. Noah Horning`15 returned to the lineup, and had a solid match in goal.
This was a great result for the Hyde lads. They came out a little flat, but managed to work through this in the first twenty minutes. They played with composure and focused on maintaining their individual positions, and doing their jobs. This allowed them to jell and play up to their potential. The next match will be Tuesday September 30th at home against Berwick Academy at 4:45pm. It promises to be a good one.
