Hyde School: 0
Bowdoin JV: 1
Boys Varsity Soccer traveled to Brunswick Maine to play a scrimmage with the Junior Varsity squad from Bowdoin College. The match was played under sunny skies on a pristine natural grass pitch.
For most of the first half of play Bowdoin dominated the possession game. The Hyde defensive unit led by CaptainAndrew Davis`15 at centerback did an admirable job of helping to limit the chances on goal for the opponent. Near the end of the first half, Hyde adjusted to the pace and skill of the opposition and midfielders Abdibaari Hersi (post grad) and Kiefer Cundy`15 started connecting passes with forwards James Kellogg`16 and Gatouch Pan`17. In the 29th minute Captain keeperNoah Horning`15 came out of the game with a contusion on his right shin, which occurred when he thwarted an attacking run and encountered said attackers cleat. Goal keeper Greg Kidger`17 came in to finish the game. In the 38th minute Bowdoin found the back of the net off a ball which was bouncing around in the box and was poked in. The score at halftime was 0-1.
Hyde had a more productive second half in terms of maintaining possession and creating chances on goal. They did a nice job of meeting the challenge of playing up to the skill and physicality of their opponents. Stopper Dow Drukker`15 had a solid game as did Nate Smith`15 who has been working his way back from a gammy knee. Keeper Greg Kidger`17 made a couple of nice saves and earned the adoration of his teammates in the process.
Given that a few of the starter were feeling the bumps and bruises from the hard play of late, combined with the skill and physicality of the opponent, this was not a bad result. The Hyde lads showed grit, and though they didn’t win the match, they certainly were in it. It was a great learning experience and offered a chance to solidify some of the more basic defensive concepts they have been working on. The next contest is September 24th with the High Mowing School. The game will be played at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter New Hampshire at 3:00pm.
