Phoenix GVS Hangs In There, Ties Bradford Christian 1-1

GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER vs Bradford Christian Academy

 Hyde – 1

Bradford Christian Academy – 1

The Hyde Phoenix loaded the busses and crossed state lines to play their first game of the season against Bradford Christian Academy.  New to their schedule, the Phoenix had never faced Bradford and didn’t know what to expect.  From the opening whistle it was clear that it was anyone’s game.

Both teams played hard and created several scoring opportunities.  Hyde’s defense was anchored by Kelsey Talbutt ’16 who played an outstanding game at sweeper alongside marking back and team newcomer Merrill Truluck ’18.  Late in the second half Bradford scored on an offensive advantage, motivating Hyde to find the equalizer before the whistle.

The second half saw more end to end action.  Diamond Brown ’16 made several big saves and distributed the ball back to midfield.  Hannah Howes ’17 and Emma Levensohn ’17 worked the midfield with intensity and continued to send through balls to striker Lilli Allen ’17, who played an outstanding game.  The Hyde goal came mid-way through the second half when a determined Jess Fuller ’16 barreled over the eighteen, shooting the ball past the Bradford keeper.  Tied, the intensity mounted as both sides of the field dug deep for the winning goal.  With minutes left in the game, Lilli Allen ’17 broke free on what was to be the last of several one on one’s to goal. Unfortunately Bradford’s keeper charged off her line to make the play of the game, a full extended diving save stopping what could have been the game winning shot.

It was an exciting game and an excellent start to the season for a very young Phoenix squad.  The team now prepares for its first overnight road trip with games against BBNS and St. Andrews.
