Character Rising to the Challenge: Phoenix Varsity Football Takes on Kents Hill, 25-16

Varsity Football vs. Kents Hill, Sept 20, 2014

Hyde: 25
Kents Hill: 16

The Hyde Phoenix travelled north to take on our MAISAD rival Kent’s Hill.  The Huskies took the opening kickoff and began to drive. Defensive lineman Deontae Crumitie ’15 (3 sacks and 4 tackles on the day), and Austin Makris ‘15 (2 sacks and 5 tackles on the day) combined to thwart their first possession with Toby Taradeina ’15 turning back Huskie tailback #28 Adam Gigliotti on a 3rd and long to force the punt.  The Phoenix then drove 58 yards in 7 plays behind the tough running of Gabe Bernstein ’15 with QB Captain Toby Taradeina punching it in from a yard on a QB sneak.  Deker Adelman ’15 added the extra point to put the Phoenix up 7 – 0 with 7 minutes to go in the first,

The momentum was clearly on the Hyde side as the first quarter ended.  However, the Huskies found their second wind and owned the second quarter by creating opportunities and capitalizing on a few Hyde mistakes. With eight minutes remaining in the half, Huskie #4 Raphael Major-Dagenais blocked the Hyde punt and #82, Luke Arsenault Adelman in the end-zone for the safety.   5 plays later Arsenault (3 catches for 27 yards) caught a 25 yard TD pass from QB Noah Henson to put the Huskies on top 7 – 10 and in control going into halftime.

Banged up, bruised and behind, the Phoenix would have to dig deep to turn both the momentum and the score around.  They did.  Hyde took possession on the 3rd quarter kickoff and drove the ball behind Taradiena’s running and an excellent 53 yard catch by Ricky Buono ’16.  Taradiena bulled his way into the end-zone at the 8:04 minute mark capping a 7 play, 76 yard drive. Adelman added the extra point to put the Phoenix back on top 14 – 10.    The Big-D stuffed the huskies and gave the ball to the offense when Ricky Buono ’16 (two interceptions on the day and 5 tackles) intercepted a Henson pass.  Three plays later, Gabe Bernstein ’15 (14 carries for 125 yards and 2 catches for 14 yards and 6 tackles) rambled 25 yards for the score.  He then caught a “Razzle” two point conversion pass to put Hyde back in control 22 – 10.

The fourth quarter saw the Phoenix Defense again control the Huskie passing and running game, bending at times but never breaking. Deker Adelman added a 36 yard field goal to the score at the 6:20 mark to put the Phoenix up 25 – 10. Two and a half minutes later the huskies capped a solid 62 yard drive after a Hyde fumble recovery, with a 2 yard TD pass from Henson to Arsenault.  Toby Taradiena (ending his day with 6 completions for 92 yards, 14 carries for 125 yards with two running TD’s and 9 tackles to his credit) stuffed the two point conversion to seal the victory with Hyde on top 25 – 16.
