Phoenix Boys JV Soccer Bows to Fryeburg in Season Opener, 3-4

Bath Boys JV Soccer vs. Fryeburg Academy

Hyde: 3
Fryeburg: 4

On Tuesday, the Boys JV Soccer team traveled to Fryeburg Academy for their first competition of the young season.  The Phoenix were off and running early, aggressive and moving the ball.  Just 4 minutes into the 2014 campaign, junior Evans Kagame ’16 put Hyde in the lead with a nice shot from 20 yards out.  But the celebration was short lived, and the Raiders quickly answered with a goal of their own.  The teams would battle back and forth for the rest of the first half.  And thanks to some phenomenal saves from keeper Greg Kidger ’17, the Phoenix would be tied 1-1 at the half.

The boys came out ready for the second half.  The Phoenix flew out with the same levels of aggression and work ethic from the first half.  Unfortunately, a couple mental errors, penalties, and unlucky bounces gave Fryeburg a 2-1 lead.  But the squad kept their composure and earned a corner kick minutes later.  The ball would be played in, bounced around the 18-yard box, and eventually finished by forward Cooper Platt ’15 with 27 minutes left to play.  After a nicely taken free kick from Fryeburg, Hyde found themselves trailing again (3-2).  This lasted until midfielder Duncan O’Rourke ’16 thought that he should change that. O’Rourke would have a brilliant half-volley from about 25 yards out that would bend over the keeper’s hands.  The two teams were knotted at 3-3 with 18 minutes left.

This standing only last seconds though, and before coach could look up from his clipboard, the ball was in the back of the Phoenix goal for the fourth and final time.  The Phoenix would push forward and give their best efforts in the final minutes, but the Raider defense would hold on strong and not let go of their lead.  The whistle would blow with the a final score of Fryeburg 4 and Hyde 3.

The team played well for their first official competition.  BJVS has a quick turn around, and a chance at redemption, when they take on Mt. Ararat on Thursday afternoon.  The team will focus on some key points during practice and put them into play in their second match.
