Strong Start for Phoenix BVS @ Berwick Jamboree

The Hyde Boys Varsity Soccer team traveled to South Berwick Maine to play in the annual Berwick Jamboree hosted by Berwick Academy on Saturday.  The format for the scrimmages consisted of two 20 minute halves of play on full natural grass pitches with certified officials.  The weather was hot and humid with light southwest breezes. Hyde faced off against Berwick Academy at 11:00  followed by a barbeque lunch.  At 1:30 Hyde played The Tilton School followed by The Holderness School at 2:30.

The Hyde boys came out for the first match of the season with a vengeance.  They controlled the pace of the match for much of the first half of play.  Frequently during the first 10 minutes, the Hyde lads played together as a cohesive unit, passing the ball well and maintaining possession.  Despite this, they were unable to convert and the game was tied 0-0 at the half.

Captain Kiefer Cundy`15 distributed the ball through the midfield with the help of Post Graduate Abdibaari Hersi.  Together they found forwards James Kellogg`16 and Gatouch Pan`17 who had some nice chances on goal.  However, the score was still knotted with 8 minutes left in the scrimmage.  At this point, Hyde had a throw-in deep in the offensive end.  Kiefer Cundy`15 connected the throw with the head of Gatouch Pan`17 for the first goal of the young season.  Captain Andrew Davis`15 led the defensive unit of Dow Drukker`15Nolan Lowder`16 and Nate Smith`15 who worked together with Captain Noah Horning`15 at keeper to lock down the win.

Tilton                    1

After lunch the boys took to the field against Tilton. Ben Mooney`16 and Dylan Budd`16 started at left and right wing respectively.  Both lads found their stride in the second match and provided some nice opportunities by spreading the ball out wide and playing it down the flanks.  With just under 7 minutes left in the half, striker James Kellogg`16 rung one off the post and Gatouch Pan`17 gobbled it up and put it in the back of the net.  The score was 1-0 at the half time break.

Tilton scored 3 minutes into the second half to tie it.  Hyde kept the pressure on and scored the deciding goal with 6 minutes left when Gatouch Pan`17 converted off a Abdibaari Hersi corner kick.  Noah Horning`15 worked his magic at keeper to preserve the lead and secure the win.

Hyde School  1
Holderness    1

By the time the squad faced Holderness, the lads were starting to show signs of fatigue.  The high temperatures combined with very humid air were starting to take their toll.  On top of this, Holderness had only played one prior match in the jamboree.  This, however, did not deter the newly formed Phoenix club.  The coaches called on the bench for reserves to play significant stretches of the game.  Max Kaplan`15 did a nice job of holding his own at right winger as did Aidan Bristow`16 on the opposite side.   Dow Drukker`15 fell back to centerback and newcomer Brandon Nelson`16 took over at stopper with David Wu`15 holding down the left fullback position.  In addition, James Lee`15 played up top at striker for a spell.  The substitutions had little effect on the flow of the match due to their intensity and ability to seamlessly gel as a team.  At half time in the contest the score was tied 0-0.

Eight minutes into the second half, Gatouch Pan`15 scored his fourth goal of the day when he got a glancing piece of a ball knocked forward byAndrew Davis`15, to put the team up 1-0.  However the best of efforts from the defense couldn’t maintain the lead and Holderness put in  the equalizer with just 3 minutes of play left. The match ended in a 1-1 tie.

All  in all a great start to the season for the Hyde Varsity Soccer team.  The next  match will be against Putnam Science Academy.  This will be played on the turf at the Hyde School in Woodstock Connecticut on Friday September 12th at 5:30.  That game will be followed by a match with Marianapolis Prep on Saturday morning the 13th at 10:00.
