On Saturday, September 6th the Phoenix traveled to Berwick to participate in the annual pre-season Berwick Jamboree. This year the participants included Tilton, Holderness and host’s Berwick Academy.
Hyde played a great opening half against Berwick, leaving the field scoreless. Standout play was delivered by Kelsey Talbutt ’16 in the mid-field and Helena Wallace ’16 in the backfield. Unfortunately, the second half slipped away from the Phoenix and Berwick was able to score several times, once on a penalty kick. Goalkeeper, Diamond Brown ’16 played an excellent game.
After a lunch break and some much needed relaxing in the shade, Hyde went out against Tilton, historically a tough opponent. Tilton had a lot of offensive pressure and tested our defensive backs. Jill Tolman ’16 stepped up and provided many key tackles and clears in our defensive third. FreshmanMerrill Truluck was also a strong defender and shut down many of Tilton’s quick strikers. While Hyde never found the net, the never lost hope and had a positive and admirable attitude throughout the game.
For the final game of the day, Hyde met Holderness. Fatigue was setting in but the girls never gave up. Holderness put some nice goals back in the net, but Hyde began working together as a team to create some offensive opportunities. On a beautiful ball from Avery Booth ’15 over the last line of defense, Lilli Allen ’17 showed great hustle to run onto the ball and had a beautiful finish in the back of the net.
For a lot of the players on the field, it was their first time ever competing in a soccer game and they certainly rose to the challenge and put 100% on the field. These girls include Jenny Balter ’15, Jessica Fuller ’16, Arianna Howard ’18, and Macy Weymer ’18. The scores do not reflect the positive attitude and work ethic in which the Hyde girls played each game!
