“I was surprised when I received the email from Harper’s,” said Jennifer Wilkey of Wiscasset. “The photo had been taken for a body of work done in graduate school in 2009.”
Wilkey’s photo titled “Heart Monitor” was featured on the cover of the April issue of Harper’s Magazine highlighting an essay “Diagnose This!” by Heidi Julavits on the increased practice of self-diagnosis by patients. The subject of the photo is Wilkey’s mother who posed for the photo with a stethoscope placed at her own heart and the earpieces in her own ears. The work is part of a series on illness and the experience of the hospital in response to her mother’s heart surgery.
Wilkey is the Director of Art at the Hyde School in Bath. She not only works in photography, but also in sculpture, illustration, and video. She received a BFA in Photography and BS in Anthropology from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville and graduated from Syracuse University in 2009 with a MFA in Photography. Additionally, she participated as a teaching artist in multiple art programs in elementary and high schools in the area. In Maine she coordinated the ArtVan, a mobile arts therapy program for low income neighborhoods. Her new body of work, “Catch and Release,” will be included in the upcoming biennial exhibition at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art.
