What a difference a day makes. After an emotional morning, the future Phoenix took flight taking on the Wolfpack from Woodstock. The Wolves jumped out to a 1 – 0 lead after the first quarter, however the Phoenix never stopped fighting for the ground ball and the advantage. The attack of Greg Kidger ’17, Alec Chapman ’17 and David WU ’15 exploded for four goals in the second quarter (while the Wolves snuck in two of their own…) to go into half-time in the lead 4 – 3.
The defensive squad of Gabe Bernstein ’15, Andrew Palermo ’15 and Tenzin Crane ’15 were joined by freshman Grayson Jones to put up a solid wall of long poles which the wolves could not penetrate in the 3rd quarter and despite 3 man up opportunities, the 3rd ended exactly as it had started with the Phoenix still on top of the Wolves 4 – 3. Mike Friedman ’15 found David WU ’15 with another beautiful feed to set up the Phoenix lead to 5 – 3 with 8 minutes to go in the game. A few new faces emerged on the Phoenix field as Lawson Lin ’15 and John Thomas ’15 gathered ground balls and became offensive threats. Goalie Hang Zhao ’15 again showed improvement with every quarter stopping 17 of 21 shots on net. After an injury delay, the game picked up a notch or two on both sides as the clocked ticked on. With 1:20 remaining, the Wolfpack dented the twine to close the gap 5 – 4. Ross Ji won the face –off and the Phoenix controlled the ball to win the game and help ensure the Presidents Cup stays in Bath… where it belongs.
Zach Harrison ’15 was awarded the “Dirty Ball” for his Heart – Hustle and Spirit throughout the game.
