Phoenix Wrestlers Place 2nd & 3rd at New England Prep School Championship

18 February 2014

Three Phoenix made the trip to Brooks School in N. Andover, MA on Friday to compete in the 2 day New England Prep School Championships.  Hyde was represented by junior 120 Hang Zhao,  junior 160 Jake Deutschlander, and senior 170 Jared Jensen.

In the opening rounds, Hang Zhao fell victim to a pair of headlocks which ended his incredible season on the losing end of things.  Hang complete just his second full year of wrestling with an incredible 21 – 5 record and has been an inspiration to coaches and teammates alike.

Deutschlander and Jensen wrestled to dominating victories in the opening rounds and found themselves competing in the semi-final round.  Jake Deutschlander squared off against the defending New England Champ at 145 from last season and wrestled a slow paced, strategic match.  Jake found himself down by a point and slipped on a throw attempt and was forced to settle for just his second defeat of the season against 24 victories.

Jared Jensen faced a now familiar Philips Andover foe, and while the match was low scoring, Jared controlled the pace and tempo and successfully added points in each period to emerge victorious.

In the Consolation Final, Jake Deutschlander would not be denied, and made quick work of his Northfield – Mount Hermon opponent.  Jake scored three takedowns before locking up the tight pin hold in the attached picture and earning 3rd place in this prestigious event!

In the Championship Finals, Jared Jensen battled his top seeded Brooks School opponent in an evenly contested match.  In the second period, Jared was caught in a quick scoring predicament and surrendered two back points in what would prove to be the difference in the match.  Jared battled back gamely, earning a takedown to come within 2 points but it would not be enough.

The Phoenix finished with two New England Placers for the second time in as many years, and their efforts secured 16th place out of the 67 schools represented at the tournament.
