Hyde-Woodstock’s Marcos Mercado ’14 Takes 2nd at New England’s

On Friday and Saturday, the Wolfpack wrestling team captain, Marcos Mercado, faced off against the best in New England at Brooks School in North Andover, MA.  He opened up on Friday with a bye in the first round and then followed this up with a quick 25 second pin in the round of 16. After a night of rest, we returned on Saturday to continue the tournament with the round of 8. Marcos again bested his opponent with a pin in the first period. His next match in the semis pitted him against a tough opponent from Tabor. Although not his best match, Marcos won with a 7-5 decision. In the finals Marcos was matched up against the wrestler from Belmont Hill who had placed 5th at the Beast; an elite invite only tournament that brings the best from all over the East Coast. After an awesome first period which ended with Marcos only down 1 point, he went into the second period with confidence. The second period proved to be more difficult and after giving up some backs, he went into the third period giving up a significant lead. Unfortunately he was beaten by tech-fall (15pt lead) in the final seconds of the last period. Marcos earned 2nd in New England and this has not been done in 5 years. In true Hyde form, Marcos was humble about this win and even gave up his Sunday to go and help with the JV New England’s being held at Tabor. Marcos will be working hard this week to prepare for Nationals at Lehigh. He hopes to earn top-8 and become an All-American. Wish him luck!
