The Phoenix Varsity Wrestling Team travelled to The Loomis Chaffee School in CT for the 53rd annual Class A League Championships. For those who may not be aware of the naming of Prep Wrestling events, this was our equivalent to the State Championship.
It was a tough day of wrestling in Windsor, CT, with each of the 13 member schools of the Class A League battling for team and individual titles, and the Phoenix showed up to wrestle!
We entered the semi-finals with wrestlers in contention for 1st and 5 still chasing 3rd. Our first semi-finalist, junior 120 Hang Zhao was upended in the semis by the #1 seed from Loomis in a scramble situation. Junior Captain 160 Jake Deutschlander wrestled to a dominating victory over his Tabor opponent, needing only 1:19 to dispatch him with a pin, and Senior Captain 170 Jared Jensen racked up the points on the way to a 12-2 Major Decision over his Deerfield Academy opponent.
We faltered in the wrestle-backs, though not for lack of effort and as the tournament entered the placing round, only the 3 aforementioned Phoenix remained to battle for the Championship.
In the 120 pound Consolation Final, Hang Zhao faced the same Philips Andover opponent who bested him last weekend in the finals of the Northerns. Though the end result was the same and Hang had to settle for a 4th place finish, his wrestling continues to improve and he is narrowing the gap between himself and the best wrestlers in New England every day.
Jake Deutschlander took it to his Northfield-Mount Hermon opponent in the Championship Finals, scoring several takedowns before locking up a tight half nelson to score the pin! Congratulations Jake!
Jared Jensen faced the same Philips Andover opponent from last weekend in a rematch of the Northerns finals. Though the score was closer, the result was the same and Jared Jensen was also crowned Class A League Champion as well!
The Phoenix will compete on Friday and Saturday at the New England Prep School Championships hosted by Brooks School in N. Andover, MA.
Now for a little history: Hang Zhao (120), Darvin Anderson (145), Jake Deutschlander (160), and Jared Jensen (170) represent the most Phoenix Varsity Wrestlers to qualify for New Englands since 2004. Jake Deutschlander and Jared Jensen have also earned a place in the history books because 1981 was the last year that Hyde had more than one Class A Champion!
Congratulate the Phoenix and wish us luck at New Englands!
