On Saturday the Hyde – ME Phoenix hosted the 2014 Northern New England Invitational which brought together 16 teams to compete for team and individual weight class titles. The Boys from Bath took to the mat with spirited tenacity and Hyde advanced 6 wrestlers into the Championship semi-final round with an additional 4 alive in the wrestle-backs after one loss.
Congratulations to Phoenix 126 pound sophomore Louis Liu and junior 170 backup Ryan Moran for earning their first varsity wins of the season!
Hyde suffered a few setbacks in the semis with 3 of the 6 having to settle for losses. Of those, only junior 182 Zac Messina wrestled back to the consolation final where he lost to his Milton Academy opponent by decision to finish 4th.
In the 120 pound semi-final, junior 120 Hang Zhao squared off against a tough opponent from Portsmouth Abbey and took little time to score the takedown and hit a beautiful cross-wrist tilt for two nearfall points on the edge of the mat. Hang took neutral to start the second period, and ran an arm bar for the fall after scoring another takedown!
Junior Captain Jake Deutschlander was all offense against his Philips Academy opponent in the 160 pound semi-final. Jake amassed 8 takedowns before securing the pin and his trip to the finals.
Senior Captain Jared Jensen linked takedowns and near fall points together to run up a considerable lead before locking up the pin in the 170 pound semi-final, and the Phoenix would have 4 wrestlers competing in the final round.
In the Championship Finals, Hang Zhao wrestled a tough opponent from Philips Academy and after trading takedowns and escapes, got caught in a headlock which he couldn’t scramble out of. Hang suffered just his first loss of the season in the finals against 18 victories and counting. He is excited for the rematch, and we are excited at his growth, power, and poise in just his second full season of wrestling!
Jake Deutschlander continued his dominance in the Championship Finals against a scrappy Milton Academy foe, including a HUGE throw in the first period taking his opponent from his feet to his back in one fluid, devastating movement! In the second period, Jake reversed his opponent to his back and locked up a tight half-nelson for the pin and the Championship.
In the most anticipated bout of the evening, Jared Jensen (ranked #3 in New England) stepped into the circle with Philips Academy’s #2 ranked Palmer at 170 pounds. Jared hit a slick takedown early in the match and followed it with a tilt to score near fall points. In the second period, Jared reversed his opponent straight to his back for 5 points and a commanding lead. When the dust settled, Jared Jensen put on a tactical show and defeated last season’s New England Prep runner up by the major decision score of 11 – 3! Congratulations Jared!
In the team race, Hyde- ME finished just 3.5 points shy of 3rd place Landmark School in 4th behind tournament champion Philips Academy. Lawrence Academy finished as the runner up, and Lexington Christian Academy rounded out the top 5.
Congratulations to Hyde – CT with 2 place finishers: Markus Rhyner 4th place at 106, and Marcos Mercado in a dominant performance to win the 138 pound weight. Congratulations also to Wiscasset High who had a runner up finish at 113 pounds.
The Phoenix head into the post season on Saturday 8 February at Loomis Chaffee School in CT for the 2014 Class A League Championships. Top 4 finishers in our League tournament earn berths in the New England Independent Schools Wrestling Championships!
Wish us luck!
