This past Saturday, the JV Wrestling team traveled to Andover, Mass for a three-way meet with Phillips Andover and Roxbury Latin. The team was ready to compete after a week of re-focusing inside, and outside, of the wrestling room. Lightweight James Lee ’15 started the day off strong. Lee was paired up against Roxbury Latin in one of the first matches of the day. James was able to pin his opponent. Lee battled tough in both of his match-ups, and went 1-1 on the day. Another strong stand-out was newcomer, Matt Rex ’15. This was Matt’s first ever wrestling meet, and after just a few weeks of practice, Matt was able to show what he had learned. Rex fought incredibly hard in both of his matches, working from the bottom and scrapping for points.
Two other first time competitors also had their debut matches on Saturday. Sam Millard ’15 was eager for his first ever live competition. Millard took on two strong, experienced opponents in both of his matches, but that didn’t shake him. Sam fought tough, took some nice shots, and worked his tail off. Noah Li ’16 was the third wrestler who had his first ever matches at the meet. Although Li may be inexperienced, he made up for his lack of skill with his pure strength. Noah found himself on the mat early, but worked his way back up. In his second match, he and his opponent from Roxbury Latin rolled around and Li even earned some back points. The most consistent worker on the team, Paul Xi ’15, had another solid day of wrestling. Xi went up against a strong Phillips Andover opponent in his first match, but battled tough as usual. Paul has really stepped up as a leader for the JV squad, both vocally and by example with his work ethic.
As always, the JV squad is looking to improve their skills and discipline inside and outside of the wrestling room. Saturday was a good demonstration of the positive attitude and work ethic that the team has inside of them. The JV team continues to work hard and learn. Some of the individuals are already looking forward to JV New Englands in February.
