The Phoenix Varsity Wrestling Team concluded the dual meet season on Saturday at Avon- Old Farms School in CT in a quad meet with Worcester Academy, Lexington Christian Academy, and the host Winged Beavers. There were many notable standouts on the day, though the Boys from Bath ended upon the short end of affairs in two of our three matches.
Junior 120 Hang Zhao’s winning ways continued on Saturday as he picked up another 3 victories measured against 0 defeats. Junior 152 Dow Drukker made his varsity debut in strong fashion earning 2 huge wins by pin, and senior 195 Jack Howarth returned to action posting a dominant 3-0 record on the day and contributing 3 pins to the team effort.
Newly appointed Junior Captain 160 Jake Deutschlander was dominant in his matches outscoring his two opponents 11-0 in the takedown category! Senior 145 Captain Darvin Anderson bumped up a weight class to take on Avon’s highly ranked 152 pounder, and fell just short in what to that point was the match of the day.
The match of the day was wrestled against Worcester Academy in the final dual of the day. New England’s 3rd ranked 170 pounder stepped into the circle to wrestle New England’s 4th ranked 170 pounder in what promised to be a tight affair. New England’s 3rd ranked 170, Phoenix Captain Jared Jensen was thinking “offense” when he stepped on the mat and he took it to his opponent from the opening whistle! Jared dominated his Worcester Academy opponent by the score of 11 – 1, and earned The Man of the Match for his efforts!

The Phoenix conclude our dual meet season with a record of 8 wins against 10 losses, and I believe we have a great deal to be proud of considering the growth and contribution of every wrestler to those wins. Against the level of competition we face, it is tough to give up multiple forfeits and emerge victorious. Hats off to the Phoenix for a dual meet record we can be proud of!
And now we turn our attention to tournament season, where individual effort and achievement contributes to the overall team score, and the post season is right around the corner! The Phoenix will be hosting 14 teams in the 2014 Northern New England Invitational in Bath on February 1. Based on current New England rankings, the Phoenix should be in the hunt for the tournament title along with Phillips Andover and Lawrence Academy. It is about to get exciting in Bath!
