Despite Loss, Wolfpack Girls JV Basketball Continues to Improve

Hyde vs. St. Andrew’s School (L 14-32)

Monday, January 13th Hyde girls JV basketball hosted St. Andrew’s school in their second home game of the season. The Hyde girls took a few minutes to pull together as a team and find the best defensive strategy to break down the St. Andrew’s offense. Hyde’s fast play and strong passing helped them overcome the defense and allow Joanna Ren ’15, Jule Arthin ’15, and Alyssa Egan ’17 to get some points on the board. The first half ended at 6-16 and the team came together to talk about the improving defense and working on communication on the court. The second half the Hyde ladies continued to take the opportunities to shoot and again Ren and Arthin put up a few more as well as Naiwen Zhang ’14 brought Hyde up to 14. Despite Hyde’s improved play, the St. Andrew’s team still were able to create holes in the defense scoring another 14 points. In their best game so far this season, Hyde finished the game at 14-32 with a lot learned and able to identify many areas for improvement.

Hyde vs. Portsmouth Abbey School (L 5-30)

The Hyde girls JV basketball team travelled to Portsmouth Abbey on Saturday January 18th. In a tough start to the game, the Hyde girls quickly fell behind the more experienced team. Superior dribbling and accurate shots made the Hyde defense work especially hard and aggressive play by Joyce Zhang ’15, Naiwen Zhang ’14, and Joanna Ren ’15 helped to disrupt the PAS advances. Hyde’s intensity increased after a fantastic 3 point shot by Ren and left the score 3-20 at the end of the first half. Working on placement in defense and maintaining proper position the Hyde team came out the second half ready to play. They worked effectively at breaking down the PAS offense and started taking advantage of fast breaks. While they were only able to get two more points, Hyde kept the PAS scoring down. The game ended with a Hyde loss of 5-30 but more knowledge of quick play and knowing communication on the court and shooting under pressure was a skill to work on. Hyde looks forward to their next game away against Barrington Christian Academy.
