Phoenix Varsity Wrestling Faces Strong Competitors at NMH

9 January 2014

The Phoenix Varsity Wrestling Team made the long trip to western Mass for the NMH Duals over the weekend.  Though decimated by recent bouts of sickness, the Phoenix arrived ready to compete against the toughest competition we have seen thus far this season.  It was definitely a “character in the face of adversity” day as we lost all five dual meets in lopsided fashion to the host Hoggers of NMH, Long Island Lutheran of NY, Wyoming Seminary of PA, Choate Rosemary Hall of CT, and the Griffons of Phillips Exeter, NH.  Unfortunately those outcomes were probably never in question given that we were forced to give 30 points in forfeits to our opponents.  For those not familiar with wrestling, imagine playing 5 of the toughest basketball teams of the season in one day with 3 players on the court.

Standouts included Sophomore 182 Ross Ji making his varsity debut and battling in every match, Sophomore 220 Jason Tang earning his First Varsity Win against Northfield – Mount Hermon, and Senior Captain Darvin Anderson who rebounded from 3 losses to very tough opponents and a disappointing forfeit win against Phillips Exeter with a dominant win vs. Choate.

The Men Of The Match were Senior Captain Jared Jensen and Junior Jake Deutschlander.  Each finished the day with 4-1 records.  Each were dominant in their victories and put on a show against quality opponents.  Each also battled with powerhouse Wyoming Seminary’s nationally ranked opponents and Phoenix fans should be inspired by their determination, drive, and grit.  These matches were all out wars and the Boys from Bath gave it all they had yesterday though Jared lost 9-3 and Jake ended up on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision.

Final Scores:

Hyde – ME  18   Long Island Lutheran 60

Hyde – ME 18  Northfield – Mount Hermon 54

Hyde – ME 15  Phillips Exeter Academy  60

Hyde – ME 6  #7 Wyoming Seminary 51

Hyde – ME 18  Choate Rosemary Hall 66

These are the kind of matches and the kind of competition we need to wrestle.  With our sights set on the 2014 Northern New England tournament and the post season immediately following, we will take what we learned this weekend back to the Gary Kent Wrestling Center, get ourselves healthy, and get ourselves ready to go!

The Phoenix hit the road on Saturday the 25th to wrap up our dual meet season in a quad meet at Avon- Old Farms in CT with Lexington Christian Academy, Worcester Academy, and the host Winged Beavers before returning home for the 2014 Northerns in Bath on 1 Feb.
