The JV Wrestling team traveled through snow and rain for a meet at Williston Northampton School near Springfield, MA. There, they were met by Eagle Hill School, Cardigan, Northfield-Mount Herman, Loomis, and Hyde-CT. The day started off a bit slow with some quick matches ending in pins for the opposing teams. But an energized Paul Xi ’15 and Dow Drukker ’15 leading the pack, turned the attitudes in a positive direction. Drukker faced two experienced wrestlers from EHS and Loomis in his two matches. Dow battled tough and showed some good moves, but was out-maneuvered in the end. Paul Xi also faced two challenging opponents, but would come off the mat asking questions and sharing ideas with all, looking to improve and learn.
The day was highlighted by victories from three Hyde Bath wrestlers. Freshman Aaron Ayala ’17 (1-1 on the day) faced a tough opponent in his first match, losing by pin. But he came back in his next match and used that experience. Ayala would pin his Eagle Hill opponent in the second period. Senior Charles Chen ’14, also flexed his wrestling muscle in his two matches. Chen came out firing in his first match, going a full 6 minutes. Charles and his Cardigan foe battled and scrapped, but Chen came out on top with a score of 19-14. Chen would end up going 1-1 on the day, losing his second match to Loomis with a late takedown, with a score of 8-7. The last match of the day fell in the lap of Alan Wu ’16. Wu (1-1 for the day) was pinned quickly in his first match, but redeemed himself in his second match. Alan Wu stepped up against his Loomis opposition and came out aggressive. Wu scored points quickly and often, winning the match 12-1.
The JV team walked on to the mat with anxiety, some nerves, and some excitement. The boys showed some good moves, and attempted maneuvers learned in our practices. Hyde JV Wrestling continues to work hard and improve his week. The squad will travel to Andover for another 4-way meet on Saturday, January 25.
