This Saturday, January 11th, the Hyde-Woodstock wrestlers traveled to Phillips Academy in Andover for their annual quad meet against Hyde-Bath, Deerfield and the host school. Still struggling to fill the ranks, the WolfPack started each match down four weight classes. This accounted for a 24 point deficit at the start of each match.
In the second match up against our sister school, both of our teams were missing key people. In the past, this has been a match in which the WolfPack gains some redemption against the Phoenix. This year, the Phoenix earned another victory allowing them to go 2-0 in match-ups against Woodstock. Some highlights of the match were Markus Rhyner ’16 and Scott Leonard ’14 who both earned pins against their opponents. Markus has especially been fun to watch and coach since he is an explosive athlete at a weight class (106lbs) where many athletes lack strength. The best match of this meet had to go to team captain, Marcos Mercado ’14, who shut out his tough opponent in a 10-0 major decision. He dominated from the top and really showed his grit and toughness in this match.
Deerfield Academy: 35
Our second match of the day was against Deerfield Academy. Over the past few year, Deerfield couldn’t muster the numbers to defeat us, but this year their squad was much stronger. Deerfield bested us with solid fundamentals and having strength in weight classes where we were strong as well. Dylan Marx ’14 and Dawit Kiflemariam ’15 earned the only pins for this match up, with the remaining points earned coming from forfeits. Marcos Mercado ’14 faced a very tough opponent, and although he led for the entire match, he lost control in the final 30 seconds and lose the match by a tough 5-4 decision.
Phillips Academy: 61
Our final match of the day was against the host school. Phillip’s has been a dominant force in both the Class A’s and New England’s for consecutive years. Although a tough opponent, we looked forward to the challenge they presented. Although many of Woodstock’s wrestlers fell by pin, Chris Kerdavid ’16 and Scott Leonard ’14 doggedly refused to quit and only gave up wins by decisions after fighting six minutes. The highlight matches went to Marcos Mercado ’14 and Markus Rhyner ’16 who both earned pins against their opponents, as well as Dylan Marx ’14 who earned a tough fought decision over his opponent. Although a lopsided outcome, the match highlighted many of the newer wrestlers grit and determination.
With some tough loses behind us, the WolfPack looks forward to this Saturday. We will be traveling to the Brunswick School where we will have our first team tournament of the season. The BIT is a competition with several teams that we don’t see during the regular season. It’s also a tournament that allows our team to be more competitive since there are no “powerhouse” schools present. Wish the wrestlers good luck and thanks for all your support.
