The Phoenix Varsity Wrestling team made the trip to Philips Academy Andover on Saturday for a Class A League quad meet vs. the host Big Blue as well Deerfield Academy, and the much anticipated rematch with the Wolfpack of Hyde – CT.
After a short week of practice marked by sickness and weather delayed returns from break, the Boys from Bath showed up ready to wrestle on Saturday. The leaders on the team did an excellent job of demanding the intensity required to train and compete at the highest levels, and we took the mat against Hyde – CT in the opening match ready to compete.
The Phoenix won the first 6 bouts in a row before the Wolfpack put team points up on the board, and the final tally stood at 46 – 22 Phoenix.
Hyde faced the host Big Blue of Philips Andover in the second bout, and despite strong effort, were simply overmatched. Hats off to junior 160 Jake Deutschlander and senior Captain 145 Darvin Anderson who each defeated highly ranked Andover opponents. Andover bested the Phoenix 60 – 19.
In the final bout of the day, Hyde faced Deerfield Academy in what appeared on paper to be an evenly contested match. In a tremendous testament to the mental toughness and resilience of this team, the Boys from Bath rallied from the Andover defeat and wrestled to a dominant win over Deerfield by the score of 48 – 24.
Standouts on the day:
- Junior 120 Hang Zhao: 3-0 with a 13 second pin vs. Andover.

The Phoenix will be working hard in the Gary Kent Wrestling Center this week in preparation for a huge Saturday of wrestling at Northfield – Mount Hermon on the 18th. Hyde will be wrestling Class A League rivals Choate – Rosemary Hall, Philips Exeter Academy, and the host Hoggers as well as Long Island Lutheran of NY and the #7 team in the nation (#2 National Preps), Wyoming Seminary of PA.
